There are many things that Allen Academy students can do in the summer to help prepare them for the year ahead. It is important to continue to strengthen the skills you have learned in 2nd grade over the summer in order to help build on those skills, as well as to increase the knowledge that you already have. Below is the list of required assignments that all Allen Academy students coming into 3rd grade must complete to help them become the best they can be.
Third Grade Theme: Discovering Character
All students must read Ace: The Very Important Pig by Dick King-Smith and complete a Venn Diagram. Choose a character from this book that reminds you of another character you’ve read about or seen in a movie, because of qualities or experiences they have in common. Draw two large circles on a 8 ½ X 11 sheet of paper, overlapping in the middle. Label each circle with the name of one of the characters you are comparing. Write sentences that describe each character in his or her circle. Write sentences that describe both characters in the overlapping section. You must include at least 3 traits in each circle and 3 in the overlapping circle making for 9 traits total.
Series Options: Choose one book from any of the following series.
In addition to reading Ace: The Very Important Pig, you must also read one book of your choice from the series listed below. We will break into groups once the school year begins and have a book talk.
Knights of the Lunch Table Series,
The Tail of Emily Windsnap Series,
